Chess As An Educational Tool

Need/Problem Statement

Beginning chess players, often experience gaps in their primary chess education. Some gaps are caused by the quality of their first instructor, ideas not covered, or the fact that some students are self-taught. What is needed is a free high-quality instruction source that is available twenty-four-seven. There is a fifty-four-percentage point deficit between middle-grade students who were exposed to high-quality fundamental chess instruction and students who were not exposed.

Our Client

Our client in this project is National Scholastic Chess Federation. This organization was founded in 1990 by FEDA Master, Sanil Weeramantry.  The primary focus of the NSCF’s programs is to develop critical thinkers using the game of chess. The cornerstone of critical thinking is considering and evaluating options. This process requires discipline, deliberation, and decision.

Major Goals

The goal of this project is to create an instructional unit for the National Scholastic Chess Federation. This IMU unit will teach chess fundamentals to begin chess students. This unit will cover the following concepts: 1) board orientation, 2) names of pieces, starting positions, and point value, 3) movement and capture, and 4) tactics fundamentals. As a stand-alone package, these units should be free and accessible to the public; however, if these lessons are connected to a larger, more advanced unit, they might also serve as a source of revenue.

Objective

The objective of “Chess as An Educational Tool IMU” are as follow:

  1. Students will explain the orientation of the chess board. Next, they will explain the letters and numbers that the columns, files, and ranks on the chess board. Next, students will identify the intersection of letters and numbers and explain the names of the squares at each intersection.

  2. Additionally, students will identify the pawns and the pieces used on a chessboard to play chess. Next, students will discuss the point value of each chess piece.

  3. Students will also explain the principles of movement and capture used by each piece on the chess board.

  4. Finally, students will analyze chess tactical principles such as pins, forks, skewers, and rams.
